Unlocking Happiness: Understanding and Healing Unresolved Grief

posted in: Grief Recovery 0

In this guest blog I am sharing the wisdom of Executive Coach, Patricia Muir, from Thrive. I hope you find this blog helpful.

Transitioning into our Executive Encore brings about significant and tangible losses, which are unprecedented. While it’s unnecessary to recount the various types of loss we have experienced, it is crucial to ensure we have a voice in the continuing conversation with a realistic sense of hope and optimism. As we live longer, we understand that we will move forward through many more transitions. We want to have the power to move forward with happiness.

How can we move forward?

While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for the grieving process, investing energy, time, and reflection becomes crucial. Discovering meaning and finding renewed purpose will fuel our focus, direction, passion, and perseverance. We can move forward with the power of meaning. The power of meaning intensifies as the grieving process shifts from negative to positive, external to intrinsic, and self to others. So, how do we tap into this positive power?

Embrace Acceptance

In a *Harvard Business Review* article (March 2020), David Kessler provided four practical tips as we were experiencing the collective grief of the pandemic. There is also a sense of collective grief as we live longer. Hence, these tips become long-term strategies.

  1. Attain balance in your thoughts by recognizing catastrophizing, rumination, denial, and habits of distraction.
  2. Practice mindfulness and/or meditation to be present in the moment.
  3. Focus on what you can control and let go of what you can’t.
  4. Cultivate compassion and avoid judgment by adding “yet” to your perception of others’ behavior.

Additionally, asking for help when needed and having our grief witnessed is important. True acceptance comes when we acknowledge what has happened and when we are open to exploring the best path forward.

Regenerate Your Power: Finding Meaning and Navigating Loss and Grief

Discover effective strategies to navigate loss and grief, practice self-compassion and empathy, and find personal meaning. Allow ample time for healing. Some types of loss and the grieving process can take months or even years. Finding meaning doesn’t eliminate the pain of loss but can facilitate connections and healing.

Grief is not limited to the loss of a loved one. Grief does not adhere to a specific timeframe. Any loss, such as loss of status or lifestyle, our routine, within our social circle, or downsizing and relocation, can bring on grief. Grief is an emotion we all experience, but when it becomes deeply entrenched or unresolved, we might find ourselves stuck in a rut of sadness that just won’t budge.

We can navigate loss and grieving by recognizing common emotional responses and learning techniques to manage grief effectively. We can find meaning through personal growth and consciously embarking on a transformative journey.

Transforming Grief: Managing Loss, Healing, and Finding Meaning

A previous blog series explored effective strategies for managing grief, emphasizing the transformative power of acceptance and meaning-making. Prioritizing self-care and cultivating self-compassion are crucial first steps in navigating the grief journey.

Understanding the Complexities of Grief – Addressing the Misconceptions

We all experience grief at some point in our lives. Whether individual, collective, or anticipatory grief, it prompts us to question its deeper meaning. We can better support ourselves and others throughout this journey by dispelling common misconceptions.

Challenging Traditional Notions of Grief

Grieving doesn’t follow a linear path or set stages within a specific timeframe. It’s a unique journey, with individuals navigating grief in their way, gradually adjusting to their loss over time.

Unraveling the Emotional Landscape of Loss

Grief involves complex and fluctuating emotions, significantly impacting emotional intelligence. Reactions, changes, and the duration of acute grieving periods vary among individuals.

Unlocking the Power of Transformation

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to grieving, recognizing diverse “normal” grief patterns provides valuable insights. Embracing the complexities of loss and actively engaging in the healing process lead to transformation and growth.

In conclusion, unresolved grief, whether it’s the loss of a loved one, lifestyle, or status, can undoubtedly limit our capacity for happiness, causing us to feel trapped in a cycle of sadness or in a perpetual low rumble of discontent. It’s imperative to understand that grief is not a linear journey but a highly individual and complex process. By embracing acceptance, challenging misconceptions, understanding the complexities of loss, and recognizing our emotional responses, we can effectively manage our grief.

Most importantly, the transformative journey of grief can lead to personal growth and renewed meaning in life. Such transformation empowers us to move beyond grief, opening the doors to peace, joy, and happiness. Remember, healing takes time and patience, but with self-awareness and self-compassion, we can develop self-trust to navigate this journey with resilience and strength.
